Level I Exam To register for the first of the three CFA exams, you will need to either have completed a bachelors degree or be in your final year of college, have four years of professional full-time work experience, or have a combination of college and professional experience totaling at least four ye ars. For proponents of alternative energy, this grease is a precious commodity, an available fuel source that can run a diesel engine to produce heat and electrical generation.Developmental programs have been underway to optimize processed waste vegetable oil and test its efficiency and practicality in power generation. The Biofuels Power Corp. in Spring, TX, recently announced plans to come online with a 9-megawatt generator that runs on refi ned waste vegetable oils. The plan is for the generator to be connected to a gas turbine to provide grid power to homes and business in the Houston area.But it is elend large-scale municipal power generation that is creating a market for biodiesel. Plant-derived fuel sources, energy experts believe, can contribute only about 1-2% of the energy needs in the United States.Market NicheWhere vegetable oil is finding a market is in distributed generation applications, in which a power system is configured to provide supplemental heat or electricity to a single home or business. Restaurants, with their continuous supply of waste oil from food preparation, are an ideal market, according to James Peret, founder and chief executive officer of Owl Power Company, maker of the Vegawatt systems.Rudolph Diesel.Richard Varano purchased a 12-kW Vegawatt from Owl. Each year, the chowder house produces about 5,000 gallons of used vegetable oil from its kitchen deep fryers. Once the cooking life of th e oil is depleted, Varanos staff deposits the waste product into storage tanks, from where it is pumped into the Vegawatt. There, a diesel engine consumes the vegetable oil to produce hot water and electricity.Varano estimates that the system provides about 25% of the restaurants electricity and 80% of the hot water.Owl, located in Boylston, MA, has sold 21 systems since the company started in 2007. Larry Fogarty, the owner of Fogartys bakery and restaurant in South Berwick, ME, purchased a 5-kW system from Owl in July 2011 to provide electricity and hot water. A friend and engineer from the local area, who used vegetable oil in automobile engines, encouraged me to consider the generator, says Fogarty. The system has performed well and Im thinking about expanding its capabilities.At $32,000, the unit was a significant business expense however, Fogarty received a grant from the state of Maine. Peret estimates that a restaurant with an installed Vegawatt can realize a 25-50% reduction in energy costs each year, which can justify the up-front cost of the system and help a client recoup the investment.The increasing interest in using vegetable oil as fuel, coupled with worldwide initiatives to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, have spawned a global industry. Large and small companies from the U.S. to Spain and from Germany to China design and manufacture vegetable oil generators and peripheral equipment like diesel conversion kits and oil filtration systems. Organic Mechanic distributes an oil press along with a line of generators.Farmers can press oil from avocado, soybean, sunflower, or other types of plants and use it to fuel tractors and other farm equipment, says Christopher Kindig, founder of the six-year old Organic Mechanic.Paper at 2011 ASME CongressThe primary obstacle to a more widespread use of vegetable oil is availability. Three researchers at the University of Roma in Italy have carried out a comprehensive analysis of power generation using palm oil in a marine diesel, assessing a range of economic and technology factors. Their system performed acceptably in the areas of emissions and heat value. The problem was the lack of biofuel availability, which forced the researchers to import other types of fuel to operate the system, driving up costs.Our results show how the fuel cost can decisively affect the feasibility of the power plant, explained Roberto Capata, a member of the research team, who lectured at the 2011 ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition in Denver, CO. If state laws and Federal laws conflict, always keep the records based on whichever requirement is longer. It is better to keep something for too long than not long enough. Hiring Records You need to save all of those resumes, bewerbungsinterview notes, applications, and job postings, and even a record of your searches through your applicant tracking system for one year after the decision to make a job offer welches made. So, if you interview an applicant, and the whole process drags on for three months, its not until thefinal hiring decision is madethat the clock starts ticking. Why do you have to do this? If anyone ever questions your hiring decision, you will need to show that you werenot discriminating illegally in any way, shape, or form. Laws such as theAmericans with Disabilities Act,Title VII, and many othersrequire you to demonstrate youre in compliance. Maintaining these records helps you do this. Drug Test Records Ifyou require drug testing for pre-employment, its part of the hiring record, and you should keep a copy of the results for one year. If you do additional drug testing, whether due to an incident at work or as part of a random check, you also need to maintain these records for one year. However, if you are subject to Department of Transportation regulations, then the minimum time frame for drug test records is five years. Payroll/Timecards, Etc. The law requires you to maintain these records for three years, but recent lawsuits mean it would be smarter for you to keep them for longer. You want t o maintain a record of how much each employee was paid, and how many hours they worked for their entire tenure at your company. Keep your records for at least five years after the employee leaves, regardless of reason. For exempt employees, of course, you dont need to maintain time records, as their pay is the same regardless of the number of hours worked. However, if you ever misclassified an employee as exempt when she should have been non-exempt, these hours worked records can guide you for paying owed overtime. Make sure that you include how the companycalculatedpay. For instance, you need to track whether it was straight salary, salary plus commission, overtime, piecework, or straight hourly pay. You need to do this not only for pay and tax questions but many other decisions rely on the number of hours worked. For instance, eligibility for FMLA is dependent on the number of hours worked in a year. If you have a part-time exempt employee, you might want to consider requiring tim e recording to determine FMLA eligibility. You also need to be able to prove that you paid your workers for all of the hours they worked. Form I-9 Maintain the employee I-9 Form, stored separately from your personnel records, for three years after you hire the employee and for one year following employment termination, whichever is later. Health/Pension Benefits Information You need to keep the records of your plans for all of your benefits for a minimum of six years. The courts have held that if an employee sues you, saying that he or she deserves a higher pension, for instance, its the employers responsibility to prove that they dont owe more, not the employees responsibility to prove that they do. Keep all of those Summary Plan Descriptions. If you have former employees who are eligible for COBRA, extending their health benefits, you should also keep those records for six years just to be safe. The law doesnt specify retention, but since this could apply under the Employe e Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), this law requires retention for six years. To be on the safe side, dont throw those records out. FMLA Records When an employee requests FMLA, you need to keep that paper trail, even if you deny the leave for three years. Make sure that you keep track of each employees leave - when it began and how much time is used. If the employee has intermittent FMLA, make sure you track every leave and document the number of hours used. Dates and the number of hours should be documented. Remember, intermittent leave can be used for a few hours in a day, or a few days in a week. Document it all and keep those records. Remember, this is not a comprehensive list and applies only to Federal statutes. You may be subject to additional record retention laws if, for instance, you are a Federal contractor or your state has different standards. When in doubt, dont throw it out. This term relates mainly to businesses, and its most commonly associated with leases for retail stores in malls. Most of these commercial leasesare formulated around some level of base rent. What Does Base Rent Mean? The term base rent refers to the minimum amount of rent thats due under the terms of a lease. This type of lease will also require the tenant to pay additional rent based on one or more factors. This add-on is typically a percentage-of-sales or participation requirement. For example, Karens Kat Corner, a pet shop, might pay a base rent each month of $1,500. Her lease also has a percentage rent requirement that she must pay on top of her base rent. This is usually a small percentage of the sales she makes each month- usually somewhere in the neighborhood of 2 percent- over a certain threshold. Consider how much these things would cost if you had to foot the bill yourself, Under a base-rent agreement, youre sharing these costs with other tenants who are also renting retail space in the mall. Calculating Your Rent Obligatio n Incorporating base rent into your business budget can be a tricky calculation. It helps to understand that your rent will never be less than the base rent amount, and you must make provisions in your budget for an extra rent percentage.If youre just opening your business, this means forecasting your most likely sales scenario.
